The beauty of handspun yarn

Handspun yarn is distinguished by its unique, tactile qualities and the spinners ability to customize every aspect of its production, from fiber choice to twist direction.

Unlike mass-produced commercial yarn, handspun is often considered "alive" because it retains the natural spring and bounce of the fibre that machine processing can stretch out.

If you're wanting to create something that is completely unique, handspun is a wonderful choice. If you're unsure about breed options or best use, please just get in touch and i'll help as soon as I can.

Frequently asked questions

What can I use this for?

Handspun yarn is perfect for unique, textured projects like shawls, hats, cowls, and mitts, where its one-of-a-kind nature shines, and for weaving, where its irregularities create beautiful, dense fabrics for items like blankets or wall hangings. It's also great for adding pops of texture in colorwork knitting with solid yarns or making decorative items like tassels and pom-poms, making it ideal for projects where you want to showcase the yarn's character rather than strict gauge.

Where is your fibre sourced?

The majority of my fibres are British and are mainly produced here in Yorkshire. Merino comes from South America, where no mulesing takes place.

What dyes do you use?

I use a range of different brands of 'acid' dyes. They are commercially prepared to give long lasting colour & light fastness whilst also being very low toxicity. The acid in the name is due to the water in the dye bath needing to be slightly acidic, so the dye absorbs into the fibres.

How much do I need?

If I had a £1 for every time I was asked this question!

The answer really is 'How long is a piece of string?'

  • What size do you imagine your completed project?
  • Do you already own something similar? weigh it, it will give you an idea.
  • Take a look on Ravelry at similar patterns and how much other people have used for their size.
  • It is always better to have a bit left over than not enough.
